"Everyone a CEO, Everyone a Leader"

A refreshing and welcome approach to a serious topic! This book is a fictional account of "How best to organize people to get things done", as told by Edward Doyle, a retired CEO living in Santa Barbara, California.

Edward, you see, has been to the future. He's spent a full year in 2015 studying and learning from enlightened and progressive leaders, and returned to share his experiences with the world. His passion is "transformational leadership", and its principles and practices that allow employees to be more fully engaged and more active participants in the organization's on-going activities.

The recipient of his discoveries in this story is Catherine David, a socially active business affairs reporter with a major newspaper in Boston. The two converse and compare notes while attending a large convention on "Leadership in the 21st Century" in New York City. As background to the story, we're told that Edward has only three months to live.

It's an insightful, indeed inspirational book that touches on several topical issues that today's society is very concerned about:

  • declining productivity and competitiveness in corporations;
  • the roles and responsibilities of people in positions of authority, like CEOs, and how they should lead;
  • the physical and mental price people pay when they are treated like inanimate objects in the workplace rather than the vibrant, creative and responsible human beings they really are;
  • corporations and their social obligations, including the environment, the law, and ethical and moral conduct;
  • and with corporations now operating globally, assuming global responsibilities including "contributing to the whole."

Edward makes several key points that demonstrate how much the work environment has changed. New, younger employees are demanding more involvement in the overall operations of the organizations where they work; they want to feel fulfilled and have a real sense of accomplishment as a result of their contributions. In light of severe shortages of highly skilled people in several categories, employee retention is now a major concern; one in three people change their jobs every three years, with serious consequences including the cost of retraining, lost production and lower productivity. And finally, many "old-school" managers have not been able to adapt to these and other significant changes in the workplace. As Edward correctly points out, people want to feel important, to know that they are valued. In turn, they earnestly want to make a meaningful contribution to the organization if only the organization would allow them to.

Edward, through interesting anecdotes, subtle wit, telling charts, meaningful statistics and natural charm leads us into his world -- the world of 2015 -- a world that is possible today. For his heroic effort to gather and share with us his new-found insights, beliefs and knowledge, despite his failing health, we are all in his debt.
